Joe Cummings is a musical director, vocal coach, pianist, composer, animateur and actor-musician working across opera, musical theatre and live performance.

His career spans some of the UK's most exciting stages, companies and training institutions. Joe is a Répétiteur at the Royal Ballet and Opera, working with its Youth Opera Chorus, and Musical Director of the Opera Holland Park Youth Chorus. He has also worked with English National Opera (Carmen ’25, La Bohème ’24), as well as London Musical Theatre Orchestra, Matilda The Musical and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Joe is a vocal coach specialising in opera and musical theatre, working with performers at professional and conservatoire level. He teaches at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and BIRD College, and has also held visiting teaching roles at Mountview and the Royal Academy of Music. He is currently undertaking Estill Voice Training, continuing to develop his specialist approach to voice, technique and performance.

Joe is also Director of Upbeat Orchestras, the education programme established with London Musical Theatre Orchestra. In just eight weeks, Upbeat transforms secondary school students — many from disadvantaged backgrounds and with little or no previous musical experience — into confident concert performers. Students receive an instrument, learn bespoke arrangements of musical theatre repertoire and perform alongside West End musicians in a celebratory concert for family and friends. At its heart, Upbeat is about discovering the confidence, connection and joy that comes from making music together.

Joe moves fluidly between the rehearsal room and the stage, writing, directing and performing as an actor-musician. His work with Hold The Drama has included creating and performing Spark and Stripes, non-verbal theatre exploring social wellbeing. He has also starred as Christopher Robin in Waterperry Opera's Winnie-the-Pooh's Adventures. As a composer, Joe's work has been commissioned and performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Royal Academy of Music.

Joe trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Music.

From coaching a singer to directing an orchestra, leading a workshop, creating new music or bringing a new show to life, Joe works collaboratively across disciplines and is always interested in making something brilliant happen.
